In 1941 he joined the Navy and was in the service for the duration of World War
II. He was an automobile mechanic before the war, but while he was in the
service he developed a very painful type of arthritis and was not able to
perform the duties of a mechanic after the war. The Navy sent him to two
different jewelry schools so he could work setting down. He was in a military
hospital in Seattle, Washington and it was there that he met his wife,
Margaret.
