Spiers Conway Howard [Male] b. 06 DEC 1938 Thomasville, Thomas, Georgia, USA

This one is Howard Russell, and Conway Spiers when they were in the Navy during WWI. They were marching in a parade in NY. Well you know the uniforms were hot and heavy and so was the weather. On top of that they had to wear these swords also. Well you know Howard a little man, and every time he took a step the sword would drag the ground. Any way they were marching and it was hot, and some little girl on the side lines yelled, I'll take the little man with the dark hair, and with that Howard stopped and started cussing. The parade went around him and two SP's picked him up. He had enough. He spent his time in the brigg, but I think he thought it better that that parade.

Uncle Conway went from the Navy to the Merchant Marine and Howard stayed in the Army I think, anyway Uncle was down on a ship and a crane was falling, and they yelled at him, and he did not under stand Spanish so he did not pay attention and the crane fell on him. He had a book of matches in his pocket and they started burning, and that did not help. They took him to the hospital and in those days they did not know enough so they just cut off his leg, in the wrong place, the Dr said if they had cut it right he could have worn a leg,
Anyway after he got better, they asked if Mother could come get him. Well, I was three days old when they wrote so that was impossible, so Grandmother left her sick husband and all her family and she went and got him.
He stayed around the house, no therapy in those days, and he did some typing, I have heard Mr Stone and Uncle Conway. fuss all day whether the sentence should read it or the. I used to sit down and be quiet and listen to them. I don't think Mr Stone ever got the book written. Anyway when WWII started, I jumped on Uncle Conway and told him to get out and get a job as if my brother was at war, he needed to make himself useful. So next thing I heard he was at Bellwood working computers. Very smart and loved his beer.
But that was my Uncle Conway.
In the good old days they had a radio show named Amos and Andy. Well it came on at 7"15 each night and we would listen. It was famous, Uncle got me a little stool and I would sit on it and listen. Not many people in the nieghtorhood had a radio, so he would turn it up and all the people would gather around Grandma's house and listen. It was a great time, and Amos and Andy were famous. Good old days. Thanks for listening, Marian Spiers Lane
