Spiers Leon Sloman Davis [Male] b. 24 JUL 1900 - d. 08 JAN 1972 Oak Grove Cem., Carson, Virginia

Have you ever heard of Raceland. Sounds famous well it was owned by Leon Sloman Spiers and his wife, Jacqueline an they lived in an old house pre Civil War and it was owned by some of the Wynnes ,Jacqueline. They used to race horses, big place. It was falling down and it was shaky and some of Slomans children restored it. I went out there, and even then it was a beautiful place. Or course, Daddy's side.

Did you know most of the Spiers went to John Marshall High School. John Marshall and George Wythe, were across from each other, and when you had a class from one building to another, you really ran to get their on time.
The best time of the day was when the Band came up the hill playing at 3:15. Every day, and you could hear the bells across the hill and it was so pretty. I had one teacher tell me if they gave A's for looking out the window, she would certainly give me one. I have always had trouble with my name, I was born Marion so I would always be put in the boys classes, then one day I was typing for Dr Harwood, a lot of us did when you got to a certain level in typing, and he came by and I asked him about the name and was tired of being put in the boy's classes, and he looked at me kinda stupid and said Marian change the O to an A and you will never have any trouble. Thank God I did.
When you sang in the choir which I did we would perform at the Mosque any time they wanted to hear the music. Well one day I think it was Easter and we all sang over at the Mosque, and I remember borrowing my Aunts evening gown as we all had to be dressed. In those days it was permissible as no one had an evening gown just the chosen few. Well it was a beautiful dress and it had little butterflies sewn on it all over. It felt so good. Anyway the next time someone wanted it, they came back to me for it. I had given it back, but they could not find it. So I was accused of keeping it. About five years after that someone found it in one of Aunt Elizabeth's trunks, So as she had three girls one of them must have borrowed it and not told they had it. Anyway I got the blame but I did not take it.
Another time at John Marshall my friend Annie Lee, had to stay after school, so the three of us ones that walked home with each other, we had to walk a mile or so to get to school each day volunteered to stay with her. It was a biology class and it was volunteer, you signed a sheet when it was time to go. One of us Florence a red head went prowling around the class and she came to a fish tank and said what's in here. Before Annie Lee could say anything she lifted off the top and a great big lizard jumped out. Needlessly to say we left and the next day the Teacher told the classes that one of her lizards had disappeared and she could not find it. Of course Annie Lee said nothing, she did not do it.
Annie Lee would put her birth date back each year so she could continue on at school and not pay for it. Each year, and when she reached 21 she finally graduated. I always admired her, as her sister quit when she was in the 10th grade. I know the school knew she did that they were bound too, but they said nothing. I admire her and she graduated and went to work for DuPont. She died three years ago, and we were still best friends Good Old John Marshall. all of our Spiers enjoyed going there and my sister Lucy did not have to run the steps, she had a permit to ride the elevator as she was puny. I have memories of that school. No air condition, just the good old air, but a lot of memories.
