George Morgan, about 47, of Carlos, was burned to death yesterday morning when fire engulfed a small building he occupied form time to time in that community. An autopsy was performed by the deputy county medical exminer and an investigation is being held by authorities. Aaron Winters, fire chief of the Shaft Volunteer Fire Company, said a call was received at 11:30 a. m. and when the firemen arrived on the scene, the building was engulfed in flames. Floyd Winebrenner and William Yates, both of Carlos, said they were in Winebrenner's Store nearby when they saw flames emitting from the building. They ran to the burning building and when they opened the door the intense heat forced them back. They saw the victim in the building but were unable to reach him. Mr. Yates had his eyebrows singed by the flames although neither of the men was burned. The gutted building is located a short distance from the home of the victim's mother, Mrs. Carrie Morgan, who is 83. The victim was reported to have stayed in the small building from time to time. He was a retired serviceman having served in the Army for 20 years and a member of Farrady Post 24, American Legion Frostburg. The fire was first noticed by Mrs. Floyd Winebrenner Sr. who lives nearby. She saw smoke coming from the roof of the building and called the Shaft Fire Company which responded with two trucks and six men Tfc. Robert C. Dishong, of the State Police, went to the scene. Besides his mother, the victim is survived by a son, Gary Morgan, Waldorf; six sisters, Miss Mary Morgan, Cumberland; Mrs. lola Conrad Frostburg; Mrs. Louise Ravenscroft, Midland; Mrs. Glady L. Wilson, LaVale; Mrs. Alice Morgan, Grahamtown; Mrs. Beatrice Warner, Finzel, and a brother, William Morgan, Woodlawn. The body is at the Hafer- Sowers Funeral Home in Frostburg where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p. m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The Cumberland News, March 7, 1969
