John James BELL was born about 1866. He died on 8 Mar 1943 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., Maryland. John J. Bell, about 80, one-time Allegany county political leader and Lonaconing merchant, died Monday night in University Hospital, Baltimore, where he had been a patient since suffering a stroke Thursday. He had resided in Baltimore for the past forty years. Active in community affairs in Lonaconing, Mr. Bell, with George Clark, planned the building of the street railway connecting Westernport and Cumberland with other towns in the George's creek vicinity. He likewise assisted in the development of a pure water supply for Lonaconing. Mr. Bell once was chairman of the Republican central committee and served as a member of the board of Allegany County Commissioners. He was his party's candidate for clerk of the circuit court, but lost to the late John W. Young. He was employed as a collector of internal revenue. He retired ten years ago as a deputy appraiser at the port of Baltimore. Born in Koontz, a suburb of Lonaconing, Mr. Bell was married in 1888 to Miss Jean Spier, of Cumberland. Since her death four years ago he had resided in Baltimore with their daughter, Miss Jean Elizabeth Bell. Two other, daughters, Mrs. F. Howard Smith, and Mrs. Howell Gwalrney, both of Baltimore; a sister, Mrs. Minnie B. VanHorn, California, and a brother, Judge William Bell, Seattle, Wash., also survive. The body will arrive here at 8:48 p.m. today and will be taken to the home of his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Upham and Miss Anna D. Spier, 211 Washington street, where funeral services will be held tomorrow. The Rev. William A. Eisepberger, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the family lot in Rose Hill Cemetery. The Cumberland Evening Times, March 10, 1943
