William Preston Strahan, oldest child of Jack and Nancy Strahan, enlisted in the Confederate Army at Rocky Point, Attala County, Miss. 29 April 1962 and was attached to Company D, 40th Regiment, Miss. Volunteers. He was born 28 Sept. 1842 and killed in the Battle of Iuka, War Between the States, 19 Sept. 1862 when General William Rosecrans, USA, attempted to expel General Sterling Price, CSA, from Northeast Mississippi. In two hours, one third of the men engaged were casualties. A historical marker marks the burial trench.(Ref. Mississippi Historical Journal, 1952-54, pages 13-20)
