A quotation favored by many genealogists is:
"He who takes no interest in the history of his ancestors does
not deserve to be remembered by posterity."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For many years a group of Menefee descendents have been working on the history of the Menefee family.

JOHN MENEFEE was one of four brothers whose activities were largely confined to the Tappahannock River Valley on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The four brothers and their wives were:
John and wife Mary James
Jonas and wife -- possibly Elizabeth Chew
Gerrard and wife -- possibly Agness Sutherland
William and wife -- probably Mildred Gaines
JOHN's wife was MARY JAMES, a daughter of John James who died after 1726. Mary's mother was Alice James who married Ambrose Grayson about 1727 and James Stevens in 1744.
We do not know the date of Mary's death, but she most likely predeceased John -- for while John left a well written Will, except for spelling, Mary's name was not mentioned.

Note: Before Willis Henry was four years old he had lost both of his parents. Shortly there after he was taken by William Nells Mitchell and PearlShaffer (husband and wife) to raise. There are stories that he was adopted by the MITCHELL's; but the records of the Ellis County, Oklahoma Court House were lost in a fire and this adoption could never be proven. Thirteeth Census of the United States: 1910-Population of Benton Township, Arnett, Oklahoma; Willis Henry is listed as Sandford, Willis, boarder, age 12, born in Oklahoma and both parents were shown to be born in Kansas. However, he carried the name of MITCHELL thoughout the rest of his life and passed it on to his children.
Note of interest: At the time he was taken into the Mitchell's home, Willis Henry was separated from his brothers. In 1911 Charles Freddie (Fred) Sandford was taken to Animas, New Mexico by Alex P Lovitt (1866 - 1942) and was raised there. Willis knew nothing of his family until an Aunt sent Fred's address to him in France during WW # 1. Willis found his brother in the war zone of France and learned about his family. (MOM TOLD ME THIS WITHIN A YEAR PRIOR TO HER DEATH).
Willis was raised by Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson Mitchell at Arnett, Okla.
