Rushing, Mary Jane (b. 23 FEB 1848, d. 7 MAY 1918)

Note: [Randaulph Lee of Ms. Descendants 10-20-2002.FTW]

The 1870 Pike County, Ms., census shows age for Mary J. as 22, occupation as Housekeeper, born in Miss.
The 1880 Pike County, Ms., census shows age for Mary J. as 22 (should have been 32), occupation as keepinghouse, born in Mississippi, both parents born in Miss.
The 1900 Pike County, Ms., census shows age for Mary J. as 52, born Feb., 1848, with 13 children, 10 surviving (this should have been 11, although Marion Hall Lee doesn't appear in the household).
The 1910 Pike County, Ms., census shows age for Mary J. as 63, married once for 44 years, 13 children with 11 surviving, born in Mississippi, both parents born in Mississippi.
Mary Jane Rushing's parents were Wiley J. Rushing (1825-1905) and Nancy C.May (Rushing)(1827-1904). Much detail about the Rushing family can be found in the book "Matthew Rushing Descendants in South Mississippi 1810 - 1995" by Helen Lyndola Rushing (Jones). Another good information source for the Rushing family is World Family Tree, Vol. 12, Tree #3424. This tree contains 3,291 individuals and was compiled by Archie Rushing, Jr., who lives in Bradenton, Fl., July 2000. World Family Tree publishes a multiple CD ROM set for use with personal computers and Family Tree Maker software.

McKenzie, Nancy Ann Elizabeth (b. 7 AUG 1844, d. 5 FEB 1926)
Note: (The following is a letter from Dewey McKenzie, husband of Betty Weatherford, daughter of Lela Cagle, sister of Amanda Cagle, wife of Archie Rushing Sr.)

"Betty and I were happy to get your work on the Rushings. I was especially interested in the McKenzie connection. My research yielded a little different information regarding Levi Rushing's third wife, Nancy Ann Elizabeth McKenzie. I believe she is the daughter of James McKenzie and Rebecca Ann Boutwell.

"I am descended from Azarell (Census shows Azearl) McKenzie and Lydia Ann Carson. Ann died in 1851 at or immediately after childbirth. The baby was Margaret Ann McKenzie, who married George Thomas, and she was my mother's grandmother. Stories she told my mother are a significant motivation for me to be doing research.

"Azarell's second wife was Julia Ann Thomas, daughter of Charles and Betsy Richardson Thomas.

"My research indicates roughly the following: McKenzie line in Marion, Walthall and Pike Counties, Ms. They don't belong with other south Miss. McKenzies.

"Alexander McKenzie b. 1722 in Scotland. His last wife was Mary Rogers, widow of Josiah Lewis. She had 3 Lewis children: Josiah, Jr., Sarah who married Robert Elliott, and Elizabeth who married William Rowell 'Who died within half a decade.'

"Alexander and Mary had two sons, Daniel and David McKenzie. While the boys were still toddlers, Alexander died. The boys were both born by 1784.

"During the 1790s Mary moved across the state of South Carolina to Beaufort District, along the Savannah River. The census shows her there in 1800 and 1810. In 1810 two of her children secured passports for themselves and families and went to Miss. Territory (Daniel McKenzie and his half sister Elizabeth Rowell). All the other children were living beside Mary in separate households. In 1811 David McKenzie and his family, along with his father-in-law's family went to Miss. Terr. In 1816, all the siblings were living beside each other in Pike County, except Josiah. I believe he stayed in South Carolina with his mother, Mary, until she died. By 1810 she was over 70.

"The McKenzie brothers lived adjacent to each other and attended the same churches, etc.

"David and his wife, Nancy Lewis, had four daughters by 1816, but we don't know their individual birth dates. In 1817 their oldest son, Azarell, was born. In 1819 Ara appeared, followed by Lucretia in 1823, Nathan D. in 1825 and Nancy in about 1829. (Nancy married Howard Tulles.)

"Daniel and his wife, Sarah Lewis (David and Daniel married sisters - daughters of Joseph B. Lewis) had the following:
James, born about 1808 in South Carolina. He married Rebecca A. Boutwell.
Some of their children were: William A., b. 1839; Daniel M., b. about 1840; Sarah A.M., b. about 1842; Nancy A.E., b. about 1844; John T., b. about 1846; and Alexander W., b. 1849.

"Daniel's other children were Suzanne, Alexander, Eliza, Martha, William, John B., Emily, Elizabeth, and Sarah A.

"Note that James, Daniel's oldest son, named his children after his parents and siblings.

"Most of Marion County's McKenzies are mostly but not all, descended from James (Daniel's son) and Nathan and Ara. Of course, by now they are all scattered everywhere. (In 1856, Daniel's son Alexander W. McKenzie, a Baptist preacher, moved to Texas and so some of our relations are out there.
Dewey R. McKenzie."

Rushing, Archie E. (b. 28 MAY 1880, d. 2 NOV 1951)
Note: Archie Sr. was the youngest son of Levi Rushing by his third wife. He appears on the 1880 Pike County Ms. census record at 2 months old. In the 1900 Pike County census he was 20 years old living with his mother, Nancy. Twenty years later he is listed in the Walthal County census at 39 years, married to Mandy. Children listed at home were: Maxie L. (step dau), Claude, Tine, Ettress and A. Lurlene.

Archie's first marriage was to Myrtis Boyd, sister of Sarah Elmora Boyd who had married his brother, Samuel Tilton Rushing. Mary Magdaline, daughter of Samuel and Sarah writes it this way: "Daddy found a place...on Pearl River - forty or eighty acres... Daddy's baby brother Archie came down there and bought him a place joining ours, my mothers sister Myrtis came to see us, and Uncle Archie and Aunt Myrtis got married. It wasn't too long she took the Typhoid fever and died." (Material dated Dec. 2, 1988) His second marriage was December 16, 1904 to Mittie Jones, third to Ella Kemp March 3, 1908. These marriages were found in Pike County records. His fourth marriage was to a woman named Sadie according to court records of a divorce in Lamar County, Ms. (See copy below.) His fifth and final marriage was to Amanda Jane Cagle. (See record copy below.)

Mr. Rushing was born at Tylertown May 28, 1880, however had resided for the past twenty-five years at Foxworth. He was a brick mason in his more active years. He passed away Friday, November 2, (1951) at an early hour at his home after an illness of about a year.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Amanda Cagle Rushing; five children, Mrs. S.C. Johnson, Route 2, Columbia, Claude Rushing, Mobile, Ala., Mrs Ettress Taylor, New Orleans, La., Mrs Sennett Singley, Route 2, Sumrall, and Archie Rushing Jr., Picayune; fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
===============================================================
The E in Archie Rushing Sr.'s name came about in this manner. When he and his brothers were teenagers they would write to their girl friends and the practice was to use initials instead of spelling out their names. He would sign his letters "A. Rushing." And his brother, Andrew, would also sign his letters "A. Rushing." In order to be able to identify his mail Archie started using the E in Archie as a middle initial, therefore "A.E. Rushing" was established. He told his son Junior Rushing this story. (See Notes for Archie Rushing Jr. as to why Junior didn't use the E.)

After their marriage Archie and Amanda lived in several places such as Walthall County, Hattiesburg and Columbia. In 1922 when Avery Lurlene died, the family was living on Unetta Street in Hattiesburg. They moved to Riverside Drive there and Bernice was born in 1923. Their next move was to Columbia where Archie Jr. was born January 10, 1925. From there they moved next to the Foxworth school and lived there until they moved into the house they had bought October 1926 when they signed the deed to an unfinished bungalow on property located on the Foxworth-Columbia road near Pearl River. This was the family home where he died in November 1951. Amanda lived there alone until she was physically unable to stay. She then sold the property and moved to Mobile, and lived with children. After the children's jobs transferred to other states, she moved to Beasley's nursing home in Fairhope, where she stayed until her death April 14, 1967.
