Leaving home at an early age we find Matthew Bilbo in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1790 court records. We next find him in Greene County, Georgia in 1795 in court records.

December 3, 1797, Matthew Bilboa was given permission to go through the Creek Nation and arrived at the Tombigbee River settlement in present day Washington County, Southern Alabama later that month. He built his home on an island in the Tombigbee River, and claimed in addition a tract of land west of the island which was bounded by the river and by Bilbo creek. The island and creek were named for Matthew Bilbo, and are known by the name Bilbo today.

On October 23, 1802, Thomas Bates, a neighbor, entered the land claim for Matthew, which leads us to believe that he was ill at the time and unable to enter his own claim. Having a neighbor transact business for one was not at all uncommon practice at the time as so many could not read and write. From the records, we know that Matthew was an educated man, capable of making his own claim unless otherwise incapacitated.
