Mc Intosh Alexander James Mikell [Male] b. ABT 1800 Darlington, Darlington County, South Carolina - d. 24 MAY 1853 Marengo County, Alabama

Alexander James Mikell McIntosh was one of three children born to John McIntosh and Sarah Mikell. He is named in the Will of his father written on April 20, 1804 in the presence of Oliver Haws, William McIntosh and Lachlan McIntosh, naming his mother, Sarah, as executrix. Content of the Will is on a separate page. He is also named in a Deed tracing his line of inheritance back to the Revolutionary War Brigadier General Alexander McIntosh. Content of the Deed, executed November 2, 1831, is on a separate page.

Alex J., as he was often referred to in written accounts, was a youngster of four when his father passed away. His older brother, John, died when Alex J. was about 17. From early census records it appears that Alex J. was still in the household with his mother as a young man of 19 or 20. In the 1830 census of Darlington, South Carolina (formerly Cheraws District), Alex J. is head of his own household, but not yet married.

In 1832, according to Welsh Neck Baptist Church records, Alex J. McIntosh was baptized and accepted as a member of the Church in Darlington. His sweetheart, Ann Eliza Dossey, was the oldest daughter of a Baptist minister, William Dossey, and she had been baptized and accepted into the Church two years earlier. Wedding records have not been found for this couple, but it seems reasonable that after Alex J. joined the church, Ann's father bestowed his blessings on the couple and joined them in matrimony.

The 1840 Census of Darlington, South Carolina lists Alex J. McIntosh as head of the household with one male under the age of 5, one male between 5 and 10, a male between 20 and 30, one between 30 and 40 (Alex J.), two females under 5, two between 20 and 30, and thirty-one slaves.

On December 4, 1841, Alex J. petitioned the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina because he was late paying his taxes. Copy of the Petition on a separate page.

On the 21st of August, 1850, the Marengo County, Alabama Census lists the family of A. J. McIntosh as follows:
A. J. McIntosh, 49, farmer, Real Estate value, $1900
Ann McIntosh,36
John M. McIntosh,16
Sarah E. McIntosh, 14
William A. McIntosh, 12
Mary E. McIntosh, 10
Margaret L. McIntosh, 5
Ann E. McIntosh, 3
All in the family were born in South Carolina with the exception of little Ann, who was born in Alabama.

Alexander James Mikell McIntosh died May 24, 1853 and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Marengo County, Alabama. The tallest tombstone in the Cemetery has the following inscription below a carving of what appears to be a willow tree; In. MEMORY OF A. J. McINTOSH, WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE MAY 24, 1853 AGED 53 YEARS.

On August 23, 1973, an article in The Demopolis (Alabama) Times with the title PIONEERS OF MARENGO County, subtitled "Dossey descendent was early grocer, merchant in Shiloh" relates interesting facts about the Reverend William Dossey's family. The following excerpt, relating to the family of Alex J. McIntosh and Ann Eliza Dossey, is from that article:.

The fifth daughter of Reverend and Mrs. Dossey was Ann Eliza who married A. J. McIntosh. Ann Eliza was born about 1814 in South Carolina. She and Mr. McIntosh were married in South Carolina about 1832. A.J. and Ann Eliza McIntosh continued to make their home in South Carolina until 1846 when they moved to Alabama settling near her father's family in Shiloh. During the settlement of Reverend Dossey's estate, Mrs. McIntosh stated that her father had given her a house and land in 1839 in South Carolina. This property was valued at $500 in 1849. She also stated that her father had given her a small piece of land in Marengo County, Alabama, worth $50.
A. J. McIntosh died on May 24, 1853, and is buried at Shiloh. A. J. and Ann Eliza Dossey McIntosh were the parents of six children. (John, the oldest was born) about 1834. In 1860 he was single, a trader and living with the Robert G. Lloyd family. Sarah E. McIntosh was born about 1836 also in South Carolina. She married January 29, 1856, James W. Ford. He was a grocer and merchant at Shiloh. They were parents of two known children -- E.M. and Willie.
Another son of A. J. and Ann Eliza McIntosh was William A. who was born about 1838. In 1860 he was single, a farmer and living with the James W. Ford family. Mary E. was born about 1840 and Margaret L. born about 1845. Both of these daughters were also born in South Carolina.
Ann E. McIntosh was born after her family moved to Alabama. She was born February 28, 1848, and died December 6, 1924. She is buried at Magnolia. On April 4, 1865, Mrs. Ann McIntosh sent a note to the probate judge of Marengo County giving her consent for her daughter, Annie, under age of 16 to marry Kennon Agee. The license was issued April 6, 1865. Kennon Agee was born January 6, 1844 at Magnolia and died December 12, 1920. He is buried in the Magnolia Cemetery.
He enlisted as a private on November 11,1861, at Fort Gaines, Alabama, in the Witherspoon Guards, Company C, 21 Alabama Regiment and continued in service of the Confederate States Army until paroled at Meridian, Mississippi, on May 11, 1865. Among the children of Kennon and Annie McIntosh Agee were William W. born in 1869 and died in 1934. He married Martha ______. Kennon Eugene Agee, another son was born in 1874 and died in 1957. He married Dovie Smith who was the daughter of John A. and Ella Kimbrough Smith.
