Remembering: Eulogy by grandson Mark Verlyn Dyslin January 28, 1999 for the funeral of Gahlen Albert Dyslin @@ the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, Iowa

As I sat down to write this special eulogy for Gandpa today, I had so many memories to choose from and so much to talk about. Grandpa was a very special man in many ways. I've written a letter to him that I would like to share with you at this time. I hope that it touches many of your personal memories of him.

Dear Grandpa,
I pondered the question long and hard about how to tell your story. Where do I begin? How do I go about it? Let me start with, I thank you. I want to thank you for being my Grandfather. For taking the time to go with me on fishing trips or to show me how to change oil in a lawn mower engine.

Thank you for sharing your stories from days gone bye and for being funny in your own dry way. I'll never forget the story you told about the day you and Glen were born. When someone asked you, "which one was born first," you would reply, "why me, of course." "Well, how did you know that, Grandpa?" "I knew that because I had to tend the fire that kept Glen warm."

Thank you for showing me the importance of spending time with family and friends and for showing me how to love them too.

Thank you for the many Christmas gifts that you and Grandma made for us. Many of those items still adorn the homes in which we live. Thank you for Christmas memories, for the new pair of pajamas or coveralls we received each year and for making peppernut cookies that tasted so sweet.

Thank you for staying up late with me on Saturday evenings to watch re-runs of Laurel and Hardy films. We both laughed so hard at times that our bellies ached from the strain of continual jokes and antics performed by the two comediennes.

Thank you for making my toy barn, wooden airplane, and toy wagon with a team of horses attached to it. I still have each gift and will forever appreciate the time and patience you took to create them.

Thank you for playing games with me even though sometimes you would rather converse then to pull out a deck of cards. It has been said that Grandma made you play one game of cards per day. However, you always complained about playing against her because you believed she cheated, but that was only because you had difficulty beating her at whatever game you played. When someone asked you what your favorite card game was, you always responded, "Ma's."

Thank you for showing me how to catch two fish at once on one line. I guess that two hooks are better then one. And yes, thank you for meeting and marrying Grandma. None of your immediate family would be here if it weren't for you.

I will always associate the smell of wintergreen fragrance with you. It took me years to figure out that it was the flavor of your chewing tobacco rather then a breathe mint you popped into your mouth from time to time.

Your crooked index finger on your right hand was due to a machinery accident and the darn thing always kept getting in the way.

Thank you for showing me what a decent days work is and what loyalty to your job means. You spent 22 years working at the county and you loved every minute of it.

I could keep on going with 'thank you's' and appreciation, but what it all boils down to, Grandpa, is one thing and that one thing is, I LOVE YOU, WE ALL LOVE YOU. Thank you for being a part of our lives and may God bless you in your new journey.

With love from, me, and all of us.

P.S. Say hello to Grandma when you see her and good luck at your card game.

A Farewell.
He had a smile for everyone, a heart as good as gold.
No one knew how much he suffered because he never told.
I watched him go with heavy heart upon his lonely way,
Altho I loved him dearly- I could not make him stay.
Written for Roy Geary after his death by his wife Sadie.[johnsd2.GED]
