Some sources say he was born in Georgia

Joe served in the War of 1812 in Pvt. Jas. Thompson's County, 13th Miss.
Territorials. The family lived in Hobolochitto District, Hancock County, Ms.

At the beginning of the Civil War Joe was one of the wealthiest men in the
county, owning 500 head of cattle and 20 slaves according to tax records. The
major crop was cotton. Their farmhouse, built before 1828, stood for at least
120 years before it was destroyed by fire.
During the Civil War Joe cut rifle holes through the thick cypress walls of the
house to protect the family not only from Yankees, but also from ban
"jayhawkers" which were raiding and terrorizing the country. He buried his gold
in caches around the house, measuring the hiding places by lengths of h
walking cane from a certain knot-hole in the front porch. It has been reported
that when he was dying he sent for a trusted nephew, James Andrew Wheat, and
told him the locations of most of the caches. His voice was said to have faded
away before he could disclose all the hiding spots. According to the family
story, about $85,000 was recovered.
