As written by Vivian (dodd) Schwendker-Wilks with correction as found in research by Carmen (Spiers) Hurrle.
Grandpa (Charles Thomas Spiers) didn't tell us much about his family as grandma (Adaline Frances (Richter) Spiers) did about hers. In fact about all that we learned was what grandma knew about them after she married grandpa. Grandpa's parents (James Welch Spiers and Lucy Benson (Mason) Spiers) came from Kentucky (not so: both born in Missouri-Lucy b: 15 Sept. 1824, d: 7 May 1886, bur. in Mt. Airy Cemetery, Warren, Missouri-James W. b: 24 Mar. 1820, d: 27 Nov. 1880, bur. same cemetery-Owned land in Hickory Grove Township, Warren Co. Mo.) (Lucy's parents both born in Virginia as per 1880 census of Warren Co. Mo.-nothing more is known of the Mason lineage as of this writing).
The Spiers family was of English descent. My great, great grandfather Spiers was a slave owner and had a large plantation. (not so: greenberry spiers b: 15 Nov. 1790 somewhere in Maryland, moved to Fayette Co. Kentucky as a very small child, had the following known brothers: George S. Spiers of St. Charles Co. Mo,? Saumuel B Spiers? (could be cousin), known sister: Prudence who married Gersham Lowery and staged in Kentucky, other probable sisters: Sally (Sarah) marr: Moses Edwards, hariet marr: Henry E Welch, Nancy Marr: Foster B. Simpson, Mary marr: Jesse Harrison. Greenberry married 1st Eliza Hall (bonds in Fayette Co. Ky, dated 20 Dec 1811) No further knowledge of Eliza at this writing. He served 6 months-15 Aug. 1812 through 15 Feb. 1813, in the War of 1812 as per National Archives Recs. He married 2nd: Nancy Welch on 3 June 1817 in Fayette Co. Kentucky. Her Father, James S. Welch had extensive property and slaves, one of which Nancy inherited in her father's will dated 1827) (Greenberry and Nancy (Welch) spiers moved to Missouri between 1817 and 1819). Great, great grandmother (Nancy) had a brother who was a Baptist missionary and was sent to Missouri before it became a state. He was famous for his work for many years. he was accompanied to Mo. by another famous missionary named Jeremiah Vardeman b: 1775 d: 1842, and they were instrumental in organizing many Baptist Churches throughout Missouri. Nancy's brother was known as Uncle Jimmy (James Ely Welch).
My grandfather (Charles Thomas Spiers) and grandmother (Adaline Frances (Richter) Spiers) were married by Rev. Welch. There were united with the old Mt. Eirie (Airy) Baptist Church, a small country church near Marthasville, MO. (actually closer to Wright City, but may have been in the postal district of Marthasville.) Uncle Jimmy was the preacher there and he baptized them in a creek after the ice had been cut away. Then they walked a distance to their homes in the wet clothing. Result, nary a sniffle!
One interesting note was the size of their families. They were each a 10th child (C.J. was the 6th or 7th child of 11 or 12-Addie was the 11th child of 12) Each family had 3 children to die as infants. (unsure of the existence and/or death of a child in the James Welch Spiers family-could have been one in the 3.5 years between the 1st and 2nd known children.) Each had brothers "George and William", also sisters "Sarah and Ann" and grandpa had a sister Adaline, same as Grandma's name.
Grandpa (Charles Thomas) had a brother in Centralia, Missouri, Billy (William Greenberry) and a sister they called patty near martinsburg, Missouri.
Grandpa was a cousin to the "Northcutts". Aunt jennie (Richter) (sister of grandma) married John Northcutt. Grandpa was also related to the "Hooks", "Travis", "Mills", "Davis", "Simpsons", and the "Kings" who were Grandpa Dodd's family. (William Neuton Dodd married Harriett Catherine King, daughter of Rueben King of Virginia and Polly Bromley (Mahoney) of Kentucky).
