PORTEOUS, Sarah Helen (Bailey)
After a four month illness, Sarah Porteous of New Liskeard died January 23, 1997 at the Temiskaming Hospital.
Mrs. Porteous was born in Earlton on August 4, 1916 to Laura and Archie Bailey. She received her education at Number One Armstrong School in Earlton and on March 25, 1936 she married Joseph Porteous in Earlton.
Mr. Porteous worked in road construction and the family moved over80 times throughout the province. They loved to travel to visit their family. Mrs. Porteous, a member of Bethel Gospel chapel, was known as a wonderful mother and homemaker who loved helping her family and friends, having tea with friends, and knitting, crocheting and trying new crafts.
Mrs. Porteous was predeceased by her husband Joseph in 1983; sons Borden Mahlon and Archie Levi; and sister Laura Jibb. She is survived by her sons, Glenn (Diane) of Ignace; Rod (Bev) of Calgary; Ron (Donna) of Calgary; daughters Bess Davis of Calgary; Heather (Tom) Hartzke of New Liskeard; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brothers Ernie (Edna) Bailey; Les (Margaret) Bailey; Alfred and Ronnie Bailey; sisters Emmaline Dunn and Archena (Bob) Sparks.
The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard and was conducted by Pastor Phil Barnes of Bethel Gospel Church. A eulogy was delivered by her daughter Bess Davis. Pallbearers were nephews Dan and David Porteous and Joe Gilbert; grandson Michael Hartzke; grandson-in-law Gaeton Rivest; and friend Pete Korte. Burial to follow at the New Liskeard Cemetery.
Relatives and friends attended from Calgary, North Bay, Kirkland Lake, Earlton, Kenabeek and the Tri-Towns.
