Joseph Spiers and Mary Fetterly Spiers

THE HUNTSVILLE FORESTER
January 11, 1940

Huntsville and northern Muskoka has learned with deep regret of the death at Bracebridge on December 24th, 1939, of Joseph Spiers, pioneer citizen of Stisted Township. His illness was brief, and his passing a great shock to his family and friends. The funeral took place on Wednesday, December 27th from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Goddard of Bracebridge, the remains being brought to Madill Cemetery for interment.

Mr. Spiers came to Muskoka with his father, the late George Spiers, Sr., in 1871 and settled in Stisted Township. He was born near Ottawa in 1860. He remained here continuously until 20 years ago, when he retired and moved to Bracebridge. On October 13, 1881 he married Miss Catherine Fetterly, daughter of the late Peter Fetterly, who survived him. He is also survived by the following members of the family: 1 son, Frederick of Bracebridge, and 3 daughters, Janie (Mrs. Wm. Hanes of Huntsville); Olive, (Mrs. Charles Goddard of Bracebridge), and Edna (Mrs. Oliver Marsh, Toronto); also 10 grandchildren. His eldest daughter, Mrs. W.E. Campsall of Emsdale, predeceased him 15 years ago.

He is survived by 1 brother, Thomas Spiers of Burks Falls, and 5 sisters: Mrs. Lewis Johns of Windsor; Mrs. Lydia Pickell of Brantford; Mrs. Frank Gaspell of Oakville; Mrs. M. Jamison of Ottawa, and Mrs. James McNabb of Thornloe.

The late Mr. Spiers farmed consistently during his long residence here, and took active part in every phase of the early development of Northern Muskoka. He was of a very jovial disposition and met every adversity which came along with a brave heart and a smile. He was therefore liked by everyone and his death will be keenly regretted.
