JAMES EDWIN KEELING, b. 10-20-1867, Geneva, Shelby co., IN; d. 6-26-1954 at the Major Hospital, Shelbyville, Shelby co., IN; m. (1) 1890, LIZZIE of Carthage, Rush co., IN (d. 1895; bur. Carthage, IN), and (2) 4-26- 1896, MARY JANE MITCHELL (b. 2-20-1876, to Mr. and Mrs. W. A. MITCHELL of Noble Township, Shelby co., IN; d. 10-6-1947, Waldron, Shelby co., IN). When a young
man he taught school in Shelby and Bartholomew Counties in order to get enough money to attend medical school. He was only 5 feet 4 inches tall. He graduated from Indiana Medical College in 1892, and took over his father's practice in Geneva, Shelby co., IN, and remained there until 1903. He moved then to Waldron, IN, where he practiced until a few months before his death. He and his wife belonged to the Methodist Church, serving as trustee and Sunday School Superintendent, and she as Sunday School teacher and organist. He served on the board of directors of the Waldron State Bank for many years. During the depression in 1931 there was a run on the bank and he publically pledged all of his assets to the depositers and stopped the panic. He served two terms as president of the Shelby County Medical Society. James and Mary are bur. in the Ogden Cemetery near Waldron, IN.
