In the 1870 Census, it shows Henry and Mary living with two hired hands. One is Kielly Meason, age 70, black woman, domestic Servant, and Alfred Buford, age 17, as farm laborer. Property values were 800.00 for real estate and 225.00 for personal property.
Henry was in the Bedford Light Artillery with John Henry Hawkins. In April, 1865, Henry was assigned to cannon # 4. He was driving the wagon that held the cannon when the Union Artillery attacked at Sailor Creek. He is noted for his bravery and dedication and for firing the last cannon of their unit before the Surrender. The story is told in the book, "The Bedford Light Artillery".
